It is sometimes advisable to melt the base directly in the container (barrel) in which it is stored. To do this, use a special steam coil, a steam “needle” or an electric panel. A conical funnel with heating elements is inserted into a container with an ointment base. The protective casing of the funnel prevents the penetration of the base to the heating elements. After melting, the base is pumped through a flexible hose under vacuum to the ointment boiler, while the grill in the base of the funnel protects the ointment boiler from ingress of impurities. For pumping ointment base, gear naeos are used that work well in viscous media. The described device, in addition to melting and transporting the base, allows it to be weighed. For this, the tank is installed on the balance before melting.
Specifications
Preparation of drugs and ointment base. Preparation of medicinal substances consists in grinding them, sifting through a sieve (with a given particle size) and mixing. If necessary, the raw materials are dissolved in the base or in water. The grinding of raw materials is necessary not only to achieve a greater therapeutic effect, but also for more accurate dosing: during grinding, the particle size of the medicinal substances is leveled, after which they mix well and do not delaminate during dosing. To grind solid medicinal substances, three-roll maser tanks, mills with paddle stirrers-knives, ball and other types of mills are used, and dispersants are used for the finest grinding. The crushed solid preparations or their aqueous solutions are added to the base with constant stirring.

The preparation of the ointment base includes the operation of dissolving or fusing its components with the subsequent removal of solids by filtration. The melting components of the base (petrolatum, lanolin, wax, emulsion waxes, etc.) are melted in electric melting furnaces (barrels with the base are rolled inside the furnace and melted, controlling temperature and time) or in melting boilers or in boilers with steam jackets. Ointment boilers are made mostly of copper or cast iron and covered with a thin layer of tin - semi-enamel or enamel. In shape they are cylindrical or spherical, and to drain the melted mass they are made overturning or with drain taps. Ointment boilers are equipped with powerful mixers suitable for operation in very viscous environments. For this purpose, the most convenient are anchor, rake or planetary mixers.
