According to their ability to interact with water (dissolution, swelling, absorption, emulsification), ointment bases are divided into three groups: hydrophobic (lipophilic); hydrophilic; diphilic.

According to the functional purpose, the auxiliary substances that make up ointments and other soft medicines can be divided into: soft carrier bases (petrolatum, lanolin, etc.); substances that increase the melting temperature and viscosity of the bases (paraffin, spermaceti, hydrogenated vegetable oils, waxes, high molecular weight polyethylene glycols, etc.); hydrophobic solvents (mineral and vegetable oils, isopropyl palmitate, isopropyl myristate, polyalkylsiloxanes, benzyl benzoate, etc.); water and hydrophilic solvents (ethyl and isopropyl alcohols, polyethylene glycols 200-600, propylene glycol, propylene carbonate, glycerin, dimexide, etc.);
emulsifiers such as oil in water (sodium lauryl sulfate, emulsifier No. 1, twins, polyoxyethylene glycol esters of higher fatty acids, salts of higher fatty acids, etc.); emulsifiers such as water in oil (higher fatty alcohols, cholesterol, alcohols of wool wax, spins, glyceryl monooleate, glyceryl monostearate, etc.); gelling agents (carbomers, alginic acid and its salts, cellulose derivatives, polyethylene, polyethylene glycols 1500-8000, bentonite, kaolin, gelatin, etc.); antimicrobial preservatives (miramistin, benzoic and sorbic acids and their salts, ethyl alcohol, propylene glycol, etc.); antioxidants (a-tocopherol, ascorbic acid and its derivative, citric acid, propyl gallate, etc.);
solubilizers f-cyclodextrin, hydrophilic surfactants, etc.); perfumes (menthol, essential oils, phenylethyl alcohol, etc.); pH stabilizers (citric acid, sodium phosphate salts, etc.).

Some auxiliary substances can simultaneously perform several of the above functions, as well as be part of ointments as emollients and moisturizers, penetrators, softeners, etc.
Gelling agents, emulsifiers and substances that increase the melting point and viscosity of the bases are also stabilizers of disperse systems. Certain excipients are mixtures of different excipients: aqueous lanolin, emulsifier No. 1, nonionic emulsion wax, an alloy of petroleum jelly with wool wax alcohols, etc.
