Dust formation and subsequent bonding and layering continue until the number of favorable collisions begins to decrease rapidly, resulting in a decrease in the growth rate of the microspheres. At this point, the third stage of pelletizing, the microsphere growth stage, begins. The main mechanism of this stage, which affects the slow growth of agglomerates, is frictional material transfer, involving the transfer of material from one pellet to another in either direction. There is no change in the total number or mass of particles during this stage.

Technical specifications

Nucleus formation is a common mechanism in all pellet formation processes – pelletization/granulation and occurs when the powder is wetted. The primary particles are connected to each other to form three-phase nuclei (air – water – particle) by means of liquid bridges. The strength of the bonding increases as the size of the -particle decreases. The size of the primary particles, their moisture content, the viscosity of the bonding particles, the wettability of the material and the processing conditions (mixing and drying rate) influence the size of the nuclei and the degree of nuclei formation. The mass and number of nuclei in the system are important characteristics of the nuclei formation stage and change in time.

Additional information

The nucleus formation stage is followed by a transition phase in which bonding and layering are involved as mechanisms of microsphere growth. Coupling is defined as the formation of larger particles by random collisions of the formed nuclei with a small excess moisture on the nucleus surface. Although the number of nuclei gradually decreases, the total mass of the system remains constant during this stage. Overlaying is a slow mechanism of microsphere growth involving the sequential attachment of fragments and dust to already formed nuclei. During layering, the number of particles remains the same while the total mass of the system increases.
