In reality, there are no sharp boundaries between the three stages of pressing, as the processes occurring in the second stage take place in the first and third stages, and we can only speak about the predominant role of individual processes in each of the pressing stages. Studies have established that the nature of compaction of granules and powder particles during pressing depends on their strength. As mentioned in Sect. 4.4, tablets are produced by three methods: wet granulation, dry granulation and direct pressing.

Technical specifications

In the second stage of pressing, as the pressing pressure increases, the material is intensively compacted by filling the voids and various types of deformation, which contribute to a more compact packing of the material. The resulting deformations can be of the following types: deformation due to elasticity helps the particles to wedge into each other, which increases the contact surface; deformation due to plastic properties makes the particles change their shape and fit more tightly together; deformation determined by the brittleness of the material, characterized by the destruction of the pressed material, occurs only when the stresses occurring in the pressed material exceed the yield strength of the material.

Additional information

In this case there is a mechanical destruction of material particles into smaller ones, accompanied by a significant increase in surface energy, which creates conditions for the emergence of contacts between particles. At the second stage of pressing a compact porous body with sufficient mechanical strength is formed from the bulk material. At the third stage of pressing at high pressure values, when the mechanical strength of tablets changes insignificantly, there is possibly a volumetric compression of powder particles and granules without a noticeable increase in contact surfaces.
